Charging Infrastructure at the heart of the Smart and Sustainable Mobility Strategy
ChargeUp Europe, the voice of the electric vehicle charging infrastructure sector in Europe, welcomes the publication of the Sustainable & Smart Mobility Strategy. We are very pleased to see a strong focus on electric mobility as one of the key priorities to enable the decarbonization of the road transport sector.
We welcome the recognition of the need for an open, transparent, and comprehensive EU EV charging infrastructure network to fully enable the uptake of zero-emission vehicles in Europe.
Furthermore, we strongly support the emphasis on the importance of interoperability between recharging services across Europe to tackle the existent fragmentation between European countries. The upcoming revision of the Directive on Alternative Fuels Infrastructure (AFID) will be critical in this regard and must ensure interoperability between all actors across the EV ecosystem and ensure the openness of the publicly accessible EV charging infrastructure ecosystem.
The Strategy rightfully puts the consumer at its core, calling for upcoming EU legislation to ensure the right conditions are in place to allow EV drivers easy access to charging stations, price transparency, choice of payment, and seamless charging across the EU. Key policies such as AFID, Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) Regulation, and the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive must be revised with this in mind.
We very much look forward to providing input into the development of these policies to make sure that they maximize the potential of the transport sector to reduce CO2 and other particles emissions in line with the European Green Deal objectives.
